Design, Code, and Me: how do i get the dimensions?

today i was using pixelmator, my image editing tool, and i ran across a frustrating problem. i had to figure out the size of a portion of the image that i needed to copy. I selected it with the marquee tool, and glanced over to the right, where i’m used to there being some sort of “info” window that lets me know the dimensions of my marquee. no dice. so i looked in the windows tab to see if maybe it was lying around and hidden. also no dice! it’s possible that the feature is hidden and i’m just not finding it, but is it possible that there’s no way to do this in pixelmator? argh.

edit: so the shortcut is to do a “copy”, then create a new file. the dimensions of the new file will be defaulted to the size of the marquee. that’s still more steps than i would like, but it’s managable.

pumping out the quick hits

1. Dad was here last weekend. events included shopping, going to Napa, and eating a boatload of italian food. you’d think that my dad and I would try other foods when we get together, but i think we went to italian places for something like 4 of 9 meals. craziness.

2. we moved into a new office today. the pluses are that it’s bigger. the minuses are that it’s a little colder.

3. also, there are boxes everywhere. i will probably never unpack my box of personal stuff.

4. improv is going very well. i’m enjoying it quite a bit.

5. mom’s coming in this weekend. liana gets here tonight!

6. annnnd… there are other things going on that i have to deal with. bye!

weekend in seattle

Took a 36 hour trip to seattle this weekend, since i have been itching to get out of town for a few months now. here’s a play by play:

Friday

  • 7:00PM: Arrive at the airport 2 hours early for flight. I always do this. While having a beer at the grill at SFO, i observe the following interaction:
  • Patron: I’m done with my meal
Bartender: (looks at unfinished plate). In this restaurant, we finish our food.
Patron: What did you just say?
Bartender: I said, in this restaurant, we finish our food.
Patron: Well, i almost never leave no tip, but here it is.

it was insane. the bartender later apologized with one of those: “i’m sorry that i can’t hit you right now.” apologies. i have no idea what set him off but i decided against ordering a sandwich for fear that i wouldn’t be able to finish it.

  • 9PM: Virgin America has all these “great” little media stuff for the flight but my TV didn’t work, the games kept crashing, and the musical choices were sub par. keep working on it guys.
  • 11PM: I get to the airport, and Michelle, Frank, Liz, and Eric all came to get me. thanks guys!
  • 12AM: Food, beer, bed.
  • Saturday

  • 9:30AM: Eric sends in Barkley the dog to wake me up. Barkley looks at me for a few seconds and decides that his mission is futile. he retreats to the living room
  • 10:30AM: we order brunch
  • 11:30AM: Brunch arrives. free coffee cake is apparently a hollow promise for suckers. my oatmeal is good except for the apple skins.
  • 12 - 4: walking around in the park. beautiful day.
  • discovery park

  • 5PM: cookout at the house. burgers, corn, deliciousness
  • 6-8PM: 4 glasses of white wine sangria requires a nap
  • 9PM: Into Capital Hill for Leah’s 30th bday party
  • 10PM-3AM: Party!
  • Sunday

  • 10AM: Call David, meet up with him and head for the bar to watch some football
  • 11:30AM: Eric’s first comment: “did you see that Brady is out?”. argh
  • 2PM: Pack up, head for the airport
  • 4:40PM: get on flight. TV signal is not working, and my audio jack is broken for my seat. I no longer will fly Virgin America under any pretenses of being entertained by them.
  • 7PM: home. yawn
  • quick hits

i had several topics for today’s post, everything from a review of labor day centered around the concept of reconnecting with old friends, to a play by play of last night’s first improv lesson, to a philosophical pondering of whether or not it’s ok to continue to live in your 30’s as you did in your 20’s. But honestly i don’t have the stamina to go into any one of those in detail. so let’s do some bullet point quick hits.

    1. Improv = awesome. totally random, my sisters new roommate is in the class. crazy talk. I have already planned out my next 6 months around taking more improv classes, and stressed about missing a class for a course i haven’t signed up for yet because of thanksgiving. now that’s planning!

    2. PT visited this weekend and we went to a VERY poorly attended A’s game:

    poorly attended a's game

the thing is, i sort of prefer oakland when there aren’t that many people there. no lines for food, easy to get to the BART, good times. PT and I spent most of the afternoon pretending to be jerks from boston. a stretch, as you might imagine.

    3. My friend from high school, Huntley, was also in town. I hadn’t seen Huntley since college, and it’s probably been 10 years since we spoke. Despite that, we were able to have a fun evening, catch up, and went from: “so what are you doing now?” to “I think that growing up is about making tough choices and closing off paths” in 3 hours or so. We also went out in the Marina, and despite my PR attempts that it’s “not bad”, i still don’t want to go out there. ever. again.

    4. Liana gets here in like 10 days! wooooo!

    5. In the next 3 weeks both my mom and dad will be visiting. I’m stressed about Dad’s visit since Liana will not be here yet and Dad wants to go to Napa. Except when we went to Sonoma last time, we went to 2 wineries, and then Dad said that he didn’t want to drink anymore. and I couldn’t drink because i was driving. i need to find some other solution. Olive Oil show maybe??

    6. Work is busy. busy enough that i left this browser window open for 2 hours while writing game challenges.

    7. and everything else, simply is…
