“Good morning Mr. Lo Conte, you owe us $100.”

In April of 2006, right before i left the urban jungle of Fort Greene (brooklyn) for this strange foggy city by the bay, i found a cell phone in a taxi cab. it was late on a friday night, and i picked up an odd looking candybar styled caller from the floor right before i stumbled out into the night. i later found out it was a Vertu (nokia’s ‘luxury’ line) and valued around $3000.

I did a little digging on the phone and found the original owner through an email address in the sim card. I emailed him and discovered that he was in Ireland, recently having returned from a business trip that apparently included lots of partying and forgetting of $3000 cell phones in cabs.

I was moving the next week, and he offered to have a courier come and get the phone from me so it could be whisked across the atlantic to its rightful owner. the DHL guy came in the same day as my movers, took the phone, and that was that. The greatful owner got it a few days later and sent me some cash for my trouble. All was well and i felt good about doing a stranger a favor.

Last tuesday, I got a call from a collections agency. Apparently the guy from Ireland (we’ll call him Sully) never paid DHL for the package to be delivered. I was informed that because of this, DHL transferred the charge to me and sold the debt to a collections agency. The agency had tracked me down (hard to do since i’ve had the same phone number for 9 years now) and was requesting that i pay them $100. I haughtily told them the situation and stated matter-of-factly that there would be no way that i was paying this, and what could i do to resolve this situation that didn’t involve my credit card? the collection agency told me to call DHL and sort it out with them.

So I call DHL. I gave them the account number and explained my story. the Customer service woman expressed her regret at the situation, but told me that since it had already gone to collections, there was nothing that they could do anymore, they had written off the debt and it was no longer their problem. She told me that if i had addressed this earlier, something could have been done. Which I would have been happy to do, if i had any idea this was happening, but since i never got any piece of mail or phone call or email, how was i supposed to know? DHL apologized but advised me to call back the collections agency and pay the balance, then find Sully and ask for the money. They assured me that there was nothing they could do to solve this for me.

My hands being somewhat tied, i called back the collections agency and asked what would happen if i decided not to pay. They told me that DHL would then have the option to take legal action against me, and put a bad mark on my credit. which is funny, because DHL seemed to be saying that they had washed their hands of the issue. The collections woman also told me that more interest on this debt could be accrued if it wasn’t paid now.

So… i sucked it up and gave them my credit card. I will NEVER use DHL again (not that i did a lot before) and i highly recommend in the future that if you ever have someone schedule a package pickup for you, you give them a fake name and address so if they decide to default payment, you’re not liable for the charges.

And Sully’s email bounced back, of course. I don’t understand why someone would give me reward money and then stiff me for the shipping. but the next time i find that guy’s phone in a cab, i’m keeping it.

Design, Code, and Me: Aviary — free online image editing tools

Remember a few months back when i was looking for free image editing tools? well, i had signed up for a beta test with a product set called Aviary, which was advertising themselves as free online image editing suites. they had a large amount of different media tools, for everything from image editing to music generation to 3d modeling. It honestly looked a little bit pie in the sky, but i dropped my email for a beta invite just to see what happened.

This morning i got an invitation to use two of their products, Phoenix and Peacock. Phoenix is a straight ahead image editor, similar to photoshop, pixelmator, or acorn. I bought a license for pixelmator here at work and have been using that for the last month, but Phoenix could handle everything that I need easily. the UI is very intuitive for a longtime photoshop user, and i had found their tools incredibly responsive. In a few minutes of messing around, i created these two images:

Mostly using a blend of drawing and blurring tools. Simple stuff for sure, but i was very impressed with the overall ease of use.

Peacock is a Quartz Composer/Max-MSP style patcher that calls itself a “pattern generator”. There isn’t any real motion in the tools like there is with quartz or max, so basically you can make pretty trippy images. like this one:

I found Peacock a little harder to wrap my head around as far as what i was supposed to be doing, but luckily i’ve used quartz and max fairly extensively in my time, so once i figured out the model, it was pretty easy to get going quickly. my only complaint was that there was no easy way to “export” an image from peacock to my desktop, though once i saved the file i was able to go find the full sized image in my browser and download it that way. doesn’t seem like it would be too hard to just have an “export” canvas button. perhaps i’m missing something.

anyways, if you want to play around with either of these, i have 5 invitations, so let me know!

I’m losing my edge…

it’s true! i was looking at my 3 years of posting, and recently everything is fine and good. and that’s all fine and good, but i wouldn’t want you to think that i’ve lost my ability to rage against things over which i have no control. so here are 5 things that are killing me right now.

1. people who cut me in line. if i was the person i always thought I would end up being, i would punch all of you in the face. of course, if i was the person i always thought i would end up being, i’d also be a rock star and wouldn’t have to wait in line with the rest of you people.

2. Twitter. I’m getting better about using it and finding a way to integrate it into my life, but at the end of the day, i just don’t need 12 updates per day from people describing the details of their daily life experiences, and i can’t imagine that other people want that from me.

3. Sharply hit ground balls. I KNOW in my head that i have to get low and move in front of the ball and risk the chance that it will bounce up and whack me in the face. My face strongly objects, and convinces the rest of my body to stand to the side and try to “OlĂ©” the ball, which almost always results in it skipping by me into the outfield, making me look like an idiot. stupid ball.

4. Ants. get out of my apartment! seriously. go somewhere else. i will stomp on all of you.

5. Phonies. I know, you thought i loved them.

forgetting to post is the new microblogging

the short recap of frank and michelle’s wedding:

wedding was awesome.

i think that this video sums it up:

and here are all the photos that i took from flickr:

wednesday is the new friday

because i will be in seattle this weekend for frank and michelle’s wedding (recap to be posted here next week), i figured i’d do my updates today.

1. art class is going well, but it’s definitely hard to convince myself to keep going every week. i’m supposed to go tonight but part of me just wants to stay late at work and blow it off. self improvement is exhausting. how did i ever do 2 classes at once while working a full time job? oh right, i was 23 and had boundless energy.

2. taking some needed time off from music stuff. i have videos of the gig from the other week which i will upload to youtube and embed here as soon as i get around to it. just have to find a time to do all the exporting…

3. apparently the secret to properly cooking frozen trader joe’s pizzas is for me to put them in the oven and then forget about them. otherwise i tend to take them out when they’re cold.

4. my 100th follower on twitter? coca cola zero. it’s about time soft drinks started listening to me.

5. excited to see everyone who will be in seattle this weekend!
