friday is a time for shipping code

at least, that’s what i’m doing. got a new game for the site, it’s a mario brother style platformer. one of our illustrators came up with the idea, and he and I were able to turn it into a working part of the site in the last week or so. today we ship. soonish i hope (baby’s done with working this week).

got to see Team Kane Street’s own Alex Rainert last night, for a few drinks and some greasy food. we discussed a myriad of topics, filling in the holes with random baseball questions. Alex is one of my favorite people because we can be talking about some pretty serious stuff, and then we’ll seamlessly transition directly into the Hall of Fame chances for Curt Schilling (Alex says no, i’m on the fence). it’s good stuff.

next week is frank and michelle’s wedding! i’m very excited. i will try and remember to take photos. photos!

my ideation sketching class is going well. we’re drawing lots of cubes. i’m not even joking. i spent 3 hours drawing cubes last week. i’m getting pretty good. ok, that’s a lie, i still suck. but i’m getting better.

ok, have to put the ipod on something other than ratatat. going crazy.

in which we speak of fridays

The celtics won the championship this week. I thought this was great for obvious reasons. it really made me reflect (and this isnt’ new ground in the cultural psyche) of how wonderful it is to be a boston sports fan, especially for these last 8 years. We’ve seen multiple super bowls, the first world series victory since before WWI, and now the resurrection of a franchise previously left for dead. Sometimes you just luck into good fortune, and I surely have done that. At any point in my life i could have “decided” to start rooting for Philadelphia, New York, or SF based teams, and given up the Boston franchises. understandable since i haven’t lived in boston since i was 17. Still, how do you “give up” your favorite sports teams? i will never know. i think it has something to do with enjoying the drinking part more than the sports part. just a guess. Next up, the Quakers!

Work has been going fine lately, though it is hard. no matter how much i think i know, i’m routinely cut down to size on a daily basis with some offhand comment like: “i don’t understand why you’re doing it that way, it’s ineffecient.” at which point i have to sweep up little pieces of my ego, put them back together into something resembling confidence, and soldier through the day’s lesson. It is hard to remember that every time i dont’ know something, it means i learn. mostly it just feels like i’m a dunce.

tonight is my first real gig since i stopped playing at those shows at the frying pan in ny. you know the ones i mean. i usually ran sound for them and got frustrated as well. i suppose some of them were fun. in any event, i’m nervous.

next week there will be time for sleep. nah, i’m just kidding. who needs to actually rest?

and you know it’s friday

because it’s comments time:

1. i have been peripherally following the Celtics the last few seasons, and it’s nice to see another Boston team doing well. well, nice for me and other Boston people. i can imagine it’s infuriating for the rest of the country. but such things are cyclical, so in 5-10 years we can all marvel at how amazing the Giants, 49ers, and warriors are doing. hrm…

2. personal trainer is great, but man it hurts sometimes. and i realize that instead of “intense weightlifting faces” i have a tendency to make “painful whimpering faces” when doing something hard. gots to work on that.

3. work is good. gotta keep disciplined.

4. surfing was a lot of fun last weekend, though it severely aggravated my toe.

5. wow, did you know that wordpress or Firefox seems to have a built in right click spell checker? i didn’t till just now when i tried to spell aggravated. thank you technology for remembering things i clearly cannot.

6. i need to buy a suit for frank and michelle’s wedding. soon. as in, if i don’t at least start looking this weekend that would be bad. i wonder if they have suits at sports basement.

phones of my life

since 2000, I have been a cell phone owner. I originally bought the phone because i was commuting long hours and it seemed to me that it would be useful to make plans before i got home from work, so i could go straight to meet people. i was correct. here are all the phones of my life:

Sprint era

2000: Samsung SGH-500
innovative flip technology let me have a phone that felt like a full length receiver when fully opened. high contrast green screen let me see who was calling. incredibly crappy hinges on the flip led to a fairly quick demise. you never forget your first.

2000: Samsung SGH-800
nice and solid, a flip phone that would always sit heavy in your pocket. big screen gave me all the info i needed, and i think i could even send text messages. its hefty weight led to it falling out my pocket on the subway. snatched up and into the void. goodbye my friend.

2002: LG TP5200
front panel lcd gave me the time and person calling without having to open the phone. led’s lit up blue on ring. began my obsession with checking my phone every 30 seconds to see the time. Played “turkey in the straw” as well as anyone. a collateral victim of my philosophical war with Sprint.

ATT/Cingular/ATT era

2003: Sony Ericsson 610
what it lacked in reception it made up for in candybar goodness. my first real text messaging vehicle. seriously, the reception was terrible.

2005-2007: The Motorola Trio(551, 810, 400)
the 551 was a great phone, till the headset stopped working. for awhile i used it on speakerphone, occasionally making me that asshole talking on speakerphone IN A BOOKSTORE. when it finally gave out, the 810 and 400 came along as low priced used alternatives. the 400 was purple, causing more than one person to question my sexual orientation. fools, all of them. can’t beat a $10 phone. the 810 lived a long second live as the backup to my n95, till i put it in the washing machine. the 400 simply disappeared one day, without even a note.

2007: Nokia N95
My Houses of the Holy. superb camera, 3G internet connection, full browser and bluetooth connection. this phone can play music videos while checking gmail and syncing your calendar to iCal. if my macbook didn’t freeze on bluetooth hangups, would be a 10 of 10.

2008: Motorola 168
at one point, the n95 lcd cracked and the 810 suffered its washing machine death. while i waited for the replacement lcd screen to arrive from hong kong, this became my new backup. lives in my bag, fully charged, waiting for crisis.

and the band plays on.
