odds and ends

i know, haven’t really posted for awhile. so here’s what’s been going on:

1. Work is fine. big changes are coming up in the next 6 weeks. i’d rather not publicly talk about them, but let’s just say that things are in “flux” as the kids like to say. I was nervous about this but then i realized that it’s out of my hands and now i’m just sort of waiting to see what happens.

2. This weekend will probably be the last tahoe weekend of the season. i’ve got visitors and stuff pretty much all through April, plus a trip to seattle for Marya’s big show. I may go up next weekend as well, but i think in any event i’m going to bring back all my gear this weekend and let next weekend be more of a “gametime” decision.

3. I had to take my car in for service this week, and it cost me $1500. on the plus side, now when i hit the brakes they feel like they’re actually doing something, and now the battery won’t die when i’m trying to start the car in Tahoe. still that’s a lot of money for a car i only drove 5000 miles this year. i am seriously considering selling the car in May when i move, and just trying to live in SF without a car, though I am also considering the Jess-approved scooter strategy.

4. which reminds me, i’m moving May 1. still haven’t found a place yet. trying not to panic. sort of failing at that. you know how it is.

5. it’s almost baseball season! i love baseball season. i predict the red sox will go 97-65, good enough for the wild card. and then the playoffs. playoffs, baby! playoffs!

ok, that’s it. i will post next week to let you all know how great tahoe was, and hopefully have some photos to prove my point.

friday WFH iPod Love

Loud Pipes, by Ratatat

I think i saw Ratatat in SF a few months ago, but i can’t remember who i went with (Ali? Aubs?). i do remember liking them a whole lot. i haven’t been to a show in too long. luckily i have a few tickets for April (Shins, Richard Buckner). so i’ll get back in the groove. quite literally.

friday wfh iPod love

we have two this week:

the first is from Neil, who texted me early this morning to say that he’s having a snow day in NY, and had “Brother” from alice in chains (off of Sap). I loved Sap. i wish AIC had made more acoustic albums before Layne decided that heroin was the new pizza.

mine is “Pick up the Phone”, by the Notwist. which i may have actually used before. let’s see… no that was a different Notwist song. i can never remember when i used to listen to this album. i think it was mostly around 04-05, as i was wandering around NY hating my job.

Watchmen

WARNING: unless you are a huge geek and comic book lover and intimately familiar with Alan Moore’s Watchmen, this post will probably mean very little to you. Also, if you haven’t read Watchmen, but want to someday, you should skip this because i’m going to talk liberally about the plot.

So, now that that’s out of the way:

Robotic Beer Launching Refrigerator

I must admit, i don’t drink a lot of beer on my couch, but if i did, this would be exactly how i rolled.

i want one of these

or really, 10 of them.

tahoe ski weekend

Manlio, Jay, and Me

so, last weekend I headed up to tahoe for another ski weekend. Frank and Michelle were in from seattle, Andy was in from NY, and Jay and Dori were up as well. I got in late friday night after making the mistake of leaving from downtown SF around 3:30. took an hour just to get out of the city, cause clearly everyone else had the same idea.

friday night was time for the old school genus edition of trivial pursuit. the game was old enough that when answering a baseball question (how many teams are named after birds), i had to debate whether or not the Blue Jays had been added before the game was published. yes. that old. Michelle’s team won and Michelle, in her ultra-competitive splendor, made sure to make me feel bad about it. but that’s ok, i wouldn’t have traded teammates for anything.

saturday we headed out to Squaw (which was sort of a sigh, because i have 2 season passes this season and neither of them are to Squaw) for maybe the best conditions i’ve seen all season. it was warm out, but there was a great base, and the snow was nice and quick. I had a decent day, conquering some black diamonds at a high speed, and then flying off a cat trail into a tree (my leg still hurts from that).

saturday night we cooked a delicous pasta dish and tried out Trivial Pursuit: Pop culture DVD edition. the game ended in a stalemate when it got too late and i couldn’t remember the pitcher who crawled through the air vent into the umpire’s room to switch the corked bat Albert Belle was using with another one. but of course i’ll never forget that as long as i live.

sunday i passed on a half day at Homewood and just headed back to the city, where i promptly fell fast asleep.

Now, to the plant!

remember when Neil was here a few weeks ago? you don’t? well, then clearly you’re not paying enough attention.

anyways, we spent our sunday recording a song, which if you’re keeping track will be the 3rd track on my “write an album in 07″ album.
