3AM: San Jose Airport

I do not have the words for this. Every single curse against every single god or pantheon with which I am familiar does not even begin to cover the immense feelings of negativity overwhelming me right now.

Just answer me this. If YOU were delayed for 6 hours on a red eye flight, and sitting at the airport around different passengers who were trying to get some rest at 2:40 in the morning, would you strike up a loud conversation with a stranger and continue said conversation at a high volume for the next 20 minutes??? Would you? Because that’s what the woman who was sitting about 10 feet away decided was the most appropriate course of action tonight. Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!! SHUT UP!!! WE’RE ALL SLEEPING! WHY ARE YOU TALKING SO LOUDLY?????!!!!!! Sigh. I guess everyone copes with flight delays in their own ways. I am starting to regret drinking the 4 FUCKING MARTINIS I HAD!!! CAUSE NOW I’M HUNGOVER!!! FUCK! I can’t wait for this wedding. Because you know who’s charming when they don’t sleep? That’s right! this guy!

weekend in preview

for one thing, i really like this picture for some reason. it’s from a site called the Creatures in my Head, which has a bunch of very good, but somewhat morbid/macabre illustrations. I can’t get over my curiousity as to the whereabouts of “Pinky”, the only ghost not pictured here. I figure he’s halfway to Donkey Kong.

in any event, tonight i am (once again) flying out to NY, to drive to MA, to go to Briehan’s wedding. i am very excited of course. this is mostly the Penn crew (at least, the people i know there), so there’s sure to be lots of drinking, and a few bad decisions made at the end of the night while everyone is intoxicated. I’m hoping we stay on the side of: “hook up with someone you shouldn’t”, and not “get behind the wheel of your car and go looking for a diner in western MA at 2AM!” with this crew, it’s a toss up.

next monday will mark 4 weeks since i last attended boot camp, and the results (or lack thereof) are sadly starting to show. so i’m starting again on monday, re-assessing, and this time i WILL keep up with it. there’s just no other workable option for me until i move much closer to a gym. though i saw a team in training pamphlet at work today, and maybe i’ll look in to that as an alternative…

last 10 days

1. my boss has been out of town, which has led to more work as the product managers have suddenly realized that they can ask me to do whatever they want and i can’t say no.

2. my other boss bitch-slapped me today and told me the demo i was working on might not get used because of my “engineering issues”. i feel like this was because his boss got on his case about something, but in any event, it sure makes me happy i worked real hard on it all last week.

3. I did very little this weekend. saw D and Mary for a bit, which was a nice surprise.

4. I auditioned for a band on friday, and basically forgot how to play guitar. seriously, it was like all of a sudden i couldn’t find a key or figure out how to play chords or solo. needless to say i don’t think i’ll be rocking out with them anytime soon.

5. I stopped going to boot camp, partially because my ankle is hurting a lot but mostly because i couldn’t get up at 5:30AM on a consistent basis. so i need to find a gym. suggestions? ideally somewhere open late that’s not too far from my apt. i would also be open to ideas for other forms of exercise, that i can do after work.

6. tomorrow i will be at a conference demoing one of our products. i’ve never done this before, so i’m a little nervous. can’t wait for the first question to which i don’t know the answer.

7. This weekend is Briehan’s wedding, ending my september of 3 weddings, and starting the last leg of the “4 of 6 weeks out of town” period that i’ve put myself through this fall.

8. my fantasy teams are all pretty mediocre. i would have thought that out of 5 teams, one of them would be pretty hot. but alas, this is not the case.

9. I miss NY. sigh.

Alex and Karen’s Wedding!

So, Alex and Karen got married last weekend in NYC. It was super fun, and they got married successfully. I’m stealing a lot of yougna’s photos for this (she was the official photographer), so the quality should be much better than my drunken point and shoot style.

Eric and Liz’s wedding

Ok, it’s 1AM in Austin Texas, and i just got in from NYC for Alex and Karen’s wedding, so now that i’m one wedding behind, i suppose i should write about Eric and Liz’s wedding post haste. apologies if this is a little bit frazzled.

music make good?

so, eric’s wedding was this weekend, but you’ll have to wait for that post until i have a little more time. hopefully i can do it tonight while i’m packing/laundrying and before i fall asleep.

but, michael and michelle and frank and I were discussing the movie Garden State, which i said i liked, and michael said that he didn’t really like, or he felt somewhat ambivalent about. and i asked him why, and he said that he didn’t appreciate Zack Braff’s use of awesome music to score different scenes, specifically the shins, because he already liked the shins and now whenever he hears that song, he can’t help but think of the movie, and that upsets him. And also he feels that using such an obviously great song to accentuate an otherwise mediocre scene is sort of cheating.

And at first i thought this was kind of a stupid argument, since part of being a good director/editor is choosing the right music for your movie, until i was watching Laguna Beach, and after a very mundane scene between Kyndra and Cami, MTV blasted some super sugary pop rock, and i somehow felt that the previous encounter was poignant, though it had just been 2 girls (women? they’re 16. girls, i think…) talking about how much they hated other girls.

and then i thought about Garden State, and realized that my 2 or 3 favorite moments in that movie (the opening sequence in his bedroom, the ectasy party, and the part where they find method man) all happen to coincide with my favorite songs on that soundtrack. And the rest of the movie i could sort of take or leave. so do i actually like Garden State? or do i just like that music? and how would i test this?

We also discussed the Wes Anderson corollary, but michael made the point that since he chooses really random music, it’s not the same heartstring tugging effect, which i guess i agree with.
