stalking the stalkers

if you don’t know about it, there’s a new friendster feature which allows you to see who’s viewed your portfolio recently. you can turn yourself to anonymous, but i think it still keeps a log. i can’t tell how far it goes back, i think it keeps track of people for a few months at least who have viewed you.

depressing things about this include that all the strangers who have viewed my portfolio are either men, women in relationships, or unnattractive.

also the thought of all the friendster bouncing I’ve done over the last few months now being public knowledge is super scary. my guess is that everyone will turn on their anonomyous settings and it’ll go back to being pretty much what it was before.

also, rocking song from the past = Breeders “Divine Hammer”. excellent song

to phd or not to phd?

so it’s no secret that i’m bored at work as of late. bored or stressed. usually both. so i’ve been thinking about going back to school to get my phd in electronic music composition at Brown. the upside of this idea is:

1. i’d be doing really cool stuff for the next 5 years
2. it would give me a good inroad to teaching
3. i could be closer to my family in New England
4. I’d have a phd in music! i mean, wow!

the bad parts of this idea include:

1. i have no idea what i would do with this degree if not teach
2. i sort of already have half of this degree, as my masters is similar to this program
3. i’d have to leave NY
4. it’s very possible that when i finish in 2011 or so, i’d still have no idea waht i want to do with anything, and on top of it be pretty much broke.

so… i dunno. seems like it might be worth applying at the very least…

mike’s coming out party

on saturday night i threw a little party for my friend mike sendrow, who just moved to NY. not many pictures, but it was a good time. i was exhausted but managed to make it out till 3AM, though i didn’t drink. and woke up today and felt great. though i still think i prefer drinking.

alex’s bday

friday night was alex’s bday, so we went out and rocked it pretty hard. started at japanese barbecue, went to porch and duke’s, and then hit sing sing for late night karaoke. i woke up unsure of most of waht i said, with one extra phone number in my phone, and a huge bruise on my ribs, from dennis (an accident)

where was the dancing version of wyatt earp?

6abc.com: Dance-Off Leads to Rumble

i really love stories which include characters who decide at some point to try and get in their car and run people over. it’s just classic.

why are my fantasy teams so bad this year?

after 2 weeks, my 3 fantasy teams are a combined 1-5. most of hte losses haven’t even been close, and the win was sort of an accident. i pretty much chose every dissappointing player in the league this year. Culpepper? got him. Jamal Lewis? got him in 2 leagues. Ravens D? also in 2 leagues. to give you a little taste of what my teams are looking like (keep in mind that the blue icons mean “cold”):

there’s a “new” math

I always was pretty good with math and numbers, so i was very interested when i saw this post off of slashdot about a UNSW (my study abroad alma mater) professor who has come up with a totally new framework for trigonometry that doesn’t include angles, sines, cosines, or any of that jazz. basically it’s a redefinition of all those concepts using mostly point distance formula and relationships between triangles. the first chapter is posted here, and i think it looks pretty good. it woudl be interesting to take all these formulas and see if writing a flash program with them made it run any faster.

arcade fire

went to see the arcade fire at summerstage tonight. every dollar of my aforementioned $40 was very well spent. David bowie came out at the end and did a few songs with them! good times

line 6 toneport

ux2

i think this is a good route for line 6. the tone port is a computer audio interface, looking to compete in the same market as the edirol and m-audio 410 models. the large advantage i can see in the line 6 version is the inclusion of the gearBox software that allows you to model the sound of your guitar through software. it’s a similar idea to native instruments guitarRig, which my friend Phil swears by. If the lower end toneport is sub $300, this could be a great starter product for guitarists looking to get into home recording.

thoughts on live music

so it has come to my attention that tickets to shows are incredibly expensive, and perhaps i’m just oversensitized to it, having grown up going to mostly big outdoor arena shows. i’m going to see the Arcade Fire tomorrow, and tickets are a reasonable $40, in my mind. but the sheer number of people who are balking at a $40 ticket is incredible. now, maybe most of these people don’t actually like the arcade fire, and are balking the same way i woudl at spending $40 to go see Maroon 5 or some other band that i feel sort of “meh” towards. but i think that being outraged with a $40 ticket for a concert is a little silly. has anyone seen what some of the larger bands are charging lately?
